The History of Recipes

Experts have proved the existance of recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. He also informs us how the Romans used many aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, fennel and dill.

Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording popular recipes of the day.

To this day people all over the world are trying to master the art of making the perfect curry, here at 'MASSALA' we are proud to say we have our special unique blend of special spices to help create the perfect balance in authentic taste.
